Ham and Rin

Bali, Indonesia

Ham and Rin gathered over 350 guests in Bali for a traditional Indonesian wedding. I had the privilege of spending an entire week with their families, learning their customs and documenting every moment.

From the priest’s blessings and traditional rituals to the official ceremony and the vibrant celebration that followed, I captured everything on photo, film, and drone. Being welcomed in like family and trusted with something so meaningful is a highlight I will never forget. Ham and Rin: thank you so much for this experience. Wishing you both a lifetime of happiness.

Five children in black traditional dress standing in the village street
Four children in black and batik under the tree, one throwing a peace sign
Makeup being finished, a compact held up above to catch the light
The getting ready room with everyone in it at once, ring lights, fans and a crowd
An elder pours water over them during the ritual, both of them soaked through
Hennaed hands and painted nails resting on a black satin gown, waiting
A guest laughing in an open floral shirt before changing
Hennaed hands crossed over the black and gold velvet, heavy gold at the collar
A portrait in the gold headdress and black velvet, a red rose set at the crown
Close in on the gold headdress and the red jewel at the temple, the makeup finished
A portrait in the full gold headdress and black and gold velvet, hands at the collar
The two of them in the black and gold, with me crouched beside them in a borrowed headcloth
Walking in under the paper flowers in the black and gold, family on either side
Three boys posing on a bench, all peace signs and grins
Everyone together in front of the flower wall at the end of the night
A toddler sitting in a plastic tub being washed, unbothered by any of it
Two girls making finger hearts for the camera
A row of children along the bench watching the ritual, an elder beside them
Five children crowded round a post, all of them posing at once
In black and white, lipstick going on, fluffy bear ears holding the hair back
Being dressed in the red and gold, two relatives working at the sash, a child playing behind
The red and gold being pinned into place, hands blurred with the speed of it
A portrait in the embroidered songkok, lit by the ring of a makeup light
The two of them on the red dais in traditional dress, family either side and children watching
Standing in the red and gold with the face powdered white, the decorated hanging behind
A portrait in the white beaded gown, crown and veil before the ceremony
A gold ring held out to the camera, the one wearing it laughing out of focus behind
Makeup going on in the white decorated room, everyone working at once
A portrait in the white beaded gown and crown, one hand raised near the chin
The veil and crown being adjusted in front of the flower backdrop
In a white tunic and gold batik, rolling a sleeve back before the ceremony
A thumbs up and a grin in the white tunic, ready to go
The two of them in white, fists up and laughing under the hanging leaves
The hand kiss at the ceremony, guests seated on the floor all round them
The bouquet handed over at the ceremony, hands to the face, laughing
A guest looks back over a shoulder in front of the red and gold wedding dais
The ring going on at the ceremony, both of them in white, guests close behind
Holding their ringed hands up to the camera, married, the room watching
A gold ring held up to the camera, laughing behind the hand, trees beyond
On stone steps against an old brick wall, the bouquet on the lap and the train spread out
Leaning in close on the steps, one looking down at the other, both smiling
Laughing with eyes shut on the steps while the other holds on and laughs too
A kiss on the forehead on the rooftop, the mountain rising behind them
The bathing ritual, family gathered in close under the tarpaulin with buckets of water
Standing on the flat roof above the village, the lace train spread across the concrete
Under the veil together, one laughing with eyes closed, the bouquet between them
Close under the veil, looking straight at the camera, flowers held between them
